G scale was introduced in about 1968 by Ernst Paul Lehmann Patentwerk under the brand name LGB and was intended for indoor and outdoor use.
The G name comes from the German word groß (gross) meaning "big". It generally covers all Large Scale model railways run in the garden.
'G' does not really represent a particular scale but rather a variety of scales which run on 45mm Gauge track. LGB who produce trains at 1:22.5 represents European Narrow Gauge Trains. Bachmann produce American Narrow Gauge trains at a scale of 1:20.3 running on 45mm track (this is also known as F Scale). Standard Gauge Trains are also run on 45mm track and they are at 1:29 Scale.
Our members have a wide spectrum of interests from running trains with a European or American Theme or even Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends for the Grandchildren. Some prefer the excitement of Live Steam whilst others run Locos under Electrical Power, Digital Command Control or Analogue or the freedom of Battery Power using radio control.
Most Large Scale Railways are in our members gardens so we do not have club premises. We also have a portable layout which we erect for our winter meetings. Members bring along their own locos to run battery, electric or even the Live Steam.
During the warmer months from May to September G Scale Scotland arrange open days to view the various railways constructed by our members.
During the colder months from October to March indoor meetings are held in Blackburn which is reasonably situated to facilitate travelling from either East, West or Central Scotland.
Although we are an autonomous group with our own constitution, G Scale Scotland is an Area Group of the G Scale Society.
The G scale society has members from all over Britain and consists of a number of local area groups.
Membership of GScale Scotland does not include membership of the GScale Society. Members of our Group are encouraged to join the GScale Society although it is not a requirement. Membership of the GScale Society does help you get the most out of the hobby by giving access to the whole G Scale community and the experience and depth of knowledge contained therein. The society produces a quarterly journal which as providing details of other members layouts as well as lot of useful information.
